Curettage

Curettage is a therapeutic procedure used to maintain uterine health.
It is performed when the uterus becomes filled with tissue—after childbirth, miscarriage, or due to diseases such as cancer—and needs to be promptly emptied.
The cervix is dilated using medication or instruments, and a curette (a sharp tool or suction device) is used to remove uterine contents.

Pre-operative Measures for Curettage

  • On the day of surgery, refrain from eating and drinking.
  • If employed, preferably take one or two days off work.
  • Be sure to take a shower before the procedure.
  • Do not use any lotions, perfumes, deodorants, or nail polish

In curettage, small instruments or a medication are used to open the narrow lower part of the uterus (cervix). Then, a surgical instrument called a curette, which can be sharp or suction-based, is used to remove tissue from the uterus.
