Knee Ligament Reconstruction

Before the surgical repair of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), pain and swelling should be resolved, and the knee's range of motion should be normal. Depending on the severity of the knee injury, this timeframe can vary from 3 weeks to 3 months. Generally, it is better not to delay the repair of a torn ACL. If surgery is delayed for more than 3 months, the risk of meniscus tears and cartilage damage increases by up to 5 times.

This is usually an outpatient procedure performed under general or spinal anesthesia. at Razavi Hospital, the procedure is performed under spinal anesthesia.

In general, knee ligament reconstruction includes the following steps:

  • The knee area is sterilized. Several small incisions are made. Arthroscopy is used for the procedure, which may involve reconnecting the torn ligament or grafting from the patellar or hamstring tendon.
  • Small holes are drilled into the tibia and femur at the tear site.
  • All holes and incisions are closed.
  • A sterile dressing is applied.
