Necessary Measures before Knee Joint Replacement
- Perform necessary X-rays to determine the type of prosthesis and purchase from the physician’s recommended company.
- Carefully control the patient's diabetes and weight to reduce the risk of infection.
- Undergo exercise testing and an ECG.
- Complete blood tests and other assessments by the hospital.
- Obtain cardiac and surgical consultations from the hospital.
- Manage and correct urinary, dental, and skin infections.
- Discontinue aspirin 7 to 10 days before the surgical procedure.
Performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes an incision over the knee joint. Using specialized surgical instruments, damaged cartilage and bone are removed from the ends of the femur and tibia. The amount of bone removed depends on the extent of the damage and the type of prosthesis. Once the damaged bone and cartilage are removed, the remaining bone is shaped to fit the prosthetic components. The prosthesis typically consists of metal parts replacing the femur and tibia ends and a plastic spacer between them for smooth motion. The metal components are securely fixed to the bone. Once the prosthetic components are securely in place, the incision is stitched. Post-surgery rehabilitation and physiotherapy are essential to regain strength, flexibility, and mobility in the knee joint. The specific rehab plan depends on the individual and the surgeon's recommendations. The recovery period after knee replacement takes approximately 4 weeks.
